Key findings

In the MeteoSwiss app, it is difficult to find various features with the screen reader, as many switches are not labelled at all or incomprehensibly labelled. Status messages and feedback are rare. With the tools tested, all elements and content are accessible, but operation is complicated because the focus is not visible everywhere. Within interactive elements, the active areas are often marked only visually and not read out by screen readers. Examples of this are the elements ‘Weather,’ ‘Overview’ or ‘Mountains’ as well as the days of the week in the weather forecast. These elements are not implemented as their own switches or tabs, so screen reader users cannot select a day of the week directly. It is also not clear at semantic level that these are tabs and which element is currently active. Weather charts and other graphic representations usually convey information using solely colour and rarely have a meaningful alternative text. It is encouraging that the animations are controllable. A large part of the app can also be displayed in landscape format.
