The Swiss Accessibility Study 2023 â Mobile Apps is the sixth edition of the highly acclaimed accessibility studies that we have been publishing since 2004 (Link öffnet in einem neuen Tab). It is Switzerlandâs first broad-based survey of the accessibility of smartphone apps.
The object of investigation
In the study, we investigated the experience people with disabilities or limitations currently have when installing or using a selection of apps popular in Switzerland on their smartphone.
Our approach
The empirical study includes the testing of selected apps for compliance with accessibility standards and feedback from users with disabilities.
The tests were carried out across defined scenarios. Depending on the complexity of the app, there are three to six scenarios. A common scenario across all apps is the use of the settings page.
How the results were assessed
In our assessment, we adhered to the success criteria and conformity conditions of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1, Level AA). This standard was originally designed for websites. As part of the development of the âAccess for Allâ foundationâs app certification (Link öffnet in einem neuen Tab), the test criterias were adapted to the specific characteristics of mobile apps.
Why the study is important
The Federal Statistical Office estimates that there are more than 1.8 million people with disabilities in Switzerland (2019 (Link öffnet in einem neuen Tab)). In order to be able to participate in society, this population group depends, among other things, on accessible technology. Over the past decade, the smartphone has penetrated essential areas of life and has also become indispensable for many people with disabilities. Apps are at the heart of smartphones. Only this ecosystem of application programs and digital helpers makes it possible to use the smartphone in a variety of ways for communication, the completion of administrative tasks or the management of everyday life.
The study aims to raise awareness of the need for digital accessibility of apps and to identify necessary improvements in future development. Additional expert insights show best practices for and approaches to improving the accessibility of smartphone apps.
