Key findings

Many key functions of the app are barely usable with a screen reader: orientation within the app is difficult due to the lack of alternative texts for icons and the lack of labels for switches. For instance, it’s almost impossible to locate the create an absence feature due to the missing label. What’s more, content is not always read out by the screen reader, even when this content is visibly in focus and activated by double-tapping. Screen reader users don’t get to find out the function of these elements, turning use of the app into a guessing game for blind people. The arrival of new messages is signalled only visually; output assistants such as screen readers are not notified of the change in status. The text size can be adjusted sufficiently; enlarging content only leads to overlapping in the calendar. Operating the app via keyboard is hardly possible because the focus disappears again and again.
